Madrid - Healthy Food Guide

Ah the land of infinite tapas + sangria, Spain. When thinking of the Spanish, there is much to celebrate about their culture and country; focus on family, siestas, warm weather, The Balearic Islands… the list goes one. One of the latter thoughts that comes to mind is healthy food, let alone plant based food! So I was rather surprised when we headed to Madrid this past weekend to discover that there were many veggie friendly spots, not only that but they were particularly good. Very good.

See below for my favourite healthy food and coffee spots in Mardrid… Vamos!

Honest Greens
Paseo de la Castellana, 89, 28046 Madrid, Spain

By far the stand out spot, Honest Greens is a cafe that turns into a salad bar come 1pm. You can customise your salad and build up from their bases. This however is no ordinary salad bar, the food is exceptionally good and fresh.. think of charred roasted cauliflower, fresh falafel made to order, plant based feta, beetroot ketchup etc. Be sure to get in around 1pm or so if you don’t fancy waiting in a long cue which doesn’t die down for several hours. There are multiple locations now but my favourite was the one listed above.

La Hummuseria Calle Hernán Cortés, 8, 28004 Madrid, Spain If you think you’ve had good hummus, think again. La Hummuseria takes the cake, hands down. Be sure to try their green tahini hummus and cumin carrots to dip. They serve up fresh house made warm pita w your hummus, too!

Luzi Bombón
Paseo de la Castellana, 35, 28046 Madrid, Spain

There are few restaurants that are as good as Luzi Bombón. Really truly the food was incredible. The sweet & sour eggplant rivals Raw Bars miso eggplant (Now thats saying something). Super nice place to sit al fresco and eat well, they pay particular attention and finesse to the food and my god does it show. A must.

For all those coffee aficionados out there, head here.

Lateral It’s Saturday night in Madrid and you’re after good tapas restaurant, ambient al fresco vibes and good drinks. Look no further than L’Ateral, delicious food and great service this place has been running for almost 20 years and there is no wavering on service and quality. It’s also apparently busy and buzzing throughout the week.

Parque del Buen Retiro
Plaza de la Independencia, 7, 28001 Madrid, Spain

Not such a food spot I suppose but a nice park nonetheless, there’s always something happening here. I saw everything from a flash mob to musicians and a roller skating group. There is a trail along the perimeter which makes for a good running loop, around 5km.
